The idol was brought from Nidhivan where Shyam-Shyama (Radha-Krishna) appeared in front of Swami Haridas and left their black idol behind which is now placed in Banke Bihari Temple, in Vrindavan.

It is one of the seven sacred temples built in the year 1863, as per the texts, which displays an imperial infrastructure. The lotus feet of Lord Krishna is always covered which are only exposed on Akshay Tritya. As per the common myth, to protect Banke Bihari from going anywhere and also to prevent the devotees from losing their consciousness, the idol of God is covered by curtains at regular intervals.
